The Passage book coverIt’s funny to me now when I look back to reflect on the main story lines of The Passage.  If I were to list them out quite plainly it would be something like: U.S. military experiment gone wrong, FBI agents on the run, a ‘new-take-on-vampires’ and post-apocalyptic survival.

I then think to myself the chances of my picking up and reading such a book, even with my penchant for the horror novel, would be relatively slim – it would likely be bumped to the back of the reading list for a quiet period.  Yet not only did I pick this book up, but I devoured it over the several nights and afternoons I had the luxury of soaking up this richest of worlds which author Justin Cronin has created.  And so grateful am I for his having done so. The Strain book coverWhen I first read that Guillermo Del Toro had teamed up with author Chuck Hogan to pen what was to be the first in a trilogy of books dealing with vampires I took note. The main reason being that Del Toro’s vision in the medium of films is persistently captivating; I’ve loved his moodily dark yet visually enchanting themes in movies from The Devil’s Backbone through to Hellboy and its sequel.

I also recall his debut film, Cronos, being one of my favourites of the 90′s, itself dealing in a most unique way with vampire lore. I am glad to say that I’ve not been disappointed with his influence in The Strain. Click here to read more.. »
